THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE QUESTION
Your body has a brake pedal.
It’s called hepcidin: a hormone that helps control how much iron your gut absorbs.
In studies of women with low iron taking 60–200 mg of iron as ferrous sulfate, hepcidin remained raised at 24 hours, reducing absorption from a following dose. By 48 hours, levels had returned towards baseline. That timing is why researchers study a day between doses.
Higher doses can still cause gastrointestinal side effects, even when a smaller proportion of the iron is absorbed. Researchers have compared dosing schedules to understand the balance between absorption and tolerability.
